HANDICAPPING

The main event, the 32 km running race, is a handicapped event.  Unlike other events when the field sets off together, this event begins with a staggered start with runners starting at different times depending on their calculated handicap. One year Steve Moneghetti started 75 minutes after the first runners.

In order to determine a handicap, entrants are required to submit details of previous performances.  Based on this information each entrant is allocated a handicap.  The handicap determines the runner’s starting time.  For example; if a runner is given a handicap of 0 minutes their starting time would be at 8:15 am, whereas if their handicap is 55 minutes their starting time would be 55 minutes later at 9:10 am.  The aim of the handicapping system is to give runners of all abilities an even chance to be first over the line.

The organising committee does not determine the runners’ handicaps.  All calculations of handicaps are the responsibility of a third party who is neither an entrant in the event nor a member of the organising committee.

All entrants are required to submit accurate and honest details of previous performances upon entering the event.  Once an entry is accepted the organisers forward all information to the handicapper.

To calculate a handicap the major considerations are:
·    all recent times (details of the previous performances over the last 24 months is of assistance)
·    personal best times
·    age and experience
·    previous performances at this event

Handicapping information:
·    must be true and accurate.
·    must include all recent performances.
·    must be when a genuine effort was made.

Handicap penalties may apply if:
·    Any current performances of note are not declared
·    An entrant provides any misleading information
·    Little or no performance information is declared
·    The information provided does not give a clear indication of running form.

The race organisers reserve the right to disqualify or penalize any competitor who is found to have breached the handicapping rules.  Penalties include the adjustment of results and the cancellation of prizes,

Handicaps are published in the Calcutta Guide which is available at the Carbo Night on Saturday night.
